The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory requirement for all Year 4 pupils in England. It is designed to assess children’s fluency in recalling their times tables, which is a vital part of their mathematical development. The MTC takes place each year in June and is an important milestone in the national curriculum for mathematics.
What is the MTC?
The MTC is an online assessment where pupils answer 25 multiplication questions. The questions focus on times tables up to 12 × 12, and each pupil has 6 seconds to answer each question. The test is simple and engaging, ensuring that pupils feel comfortable while demonstrating their knowledge.
Why is the MTC important?
Learning times tables is an essential foundation for mathematics. When children can recall their times tables fluently, they can solve more complex problems in areas like division, fractions, and algebra with confidence. The MTC allows schools to identify how well pupils have mastered their times tables and provides valuable insight to help support their ongoing progress.
How do we prepare at Clore Tikva?
At Clore Tikva, we prioritise building strong mathematical skills, and regular practice of times tables is an important part of this. Pupils use a variety of resources, including fun online tools, classroom activities, and their Times Tables books, to build their confidence and speed. We aim to make learning times tables enjoyable and stress-free.
How can parents help?
We encourage parents to support their children by practising times tables at home. Simple activities like quizzing, playing times tables games, or using educational apps can make a big difference in helping children feel confident and prepared for the MTC.
Working together, we can help every child succeed!
